Many people are asking, “Why did Heather Unbehaun lose custody of her daughter, Kayla Unbehaun?” Take a detailed look at Kayla’s abduction case below.

Thanks to the recent episode of Unsolved Mysteries, Kayla Unbehaun has been reunited with her father/custodial parents. Authorities found Kayla safe miles away in North Carolina on 14 May 2023.

After watching her story on the Netflix series Unsolved Mysteries, an unidentified person spotted the teenager. The person notified the authorities found a woman and a teenager at a local business in Asheville, North Carolina.

Kayla Unbehaun is a girl kidnapped by her mother, Heather Unbehaun, in suburban Chicago around six years ago.

Heather Unbehaun was wanted by an extradition order from Illinois for kidnapping children. Kayla was reunited with her father after Heather’s arrest.

Why Did Heather Unbehaun Lose Custody?

According to the NCMEC, Kayla Unbehaun was nine years old when her non-custodial mother, Heather Unbehaun, kidnapped her from the Illinois town of South Elgin near Chicago.

Kayla Unbehaun’s custodial father, Ryan Iserka, reported her missing. However, the police officers could locate the girl for around six years.

The Unsolved Mysteries flashed Kayla and Heather’s photo on screen at the final moments of the episode titled “Abducted by a Parent.” The episode featured the story of two cases of non-custodial parents kidnapping their children.

Heather was one of them. It is unknown why she lost custody of Kayla. Many of the specifics of Kayla’s case are still unknown because her story was left untouched by the Unsolved Mysteries episode.

It appears that the family is hoping for some privacy now that she is back with her father and her mother has been taken into custody.

Ryan Iserka said that he is overjoyed as his daughter is home safe.

In a statement, Kayla Unbehaun’s father, Ryan, thanked the NEMEC (National Center for Missing & Exploited Children), the City of Elgin, Illinois Police and Fire Departments, and all other law enforcement agencies that helped with her case.

He added, “As we navigate this new beginning and get to know one another again, we ask for privacy.”

Kayla Unbehaun Kidnapped Case

Kayla’s father, Iskerka, wrote on a GoFundMe web page that he was supposed to pick up his daughter, Kayla, on 5 July 2017. Ryan revealed that a court mandated the exchange, meaning he won Kayla’s custody.

The mother and daughter never arrived for the exchange. They went missing for almost six years despite appeals from Iskerka, the police, and other authorities.

According to the NEMEC, Heather Unbehaun was the subject of a felony kidnapping warrant in July 2017.

In the years following her kidnapping, the NEMEC even published internet alerts with photos of the missing child at age nine and age-progression images of what she probably looks like now, but these efforts were unsuccessful.

One of the family abductions depicted on the Netflix Unsolved Mysteries revival, which premiered in November 2022, was the girl’s disappearance in 2017.

The Missing Children Roll, which also includes CJ and Billy Vosseler, Luis Alderete-Martinez, Huaiyu and Binyu Chin, Reuben Blackwell Jr., Tammy and Diego Flores, and Christopher and Lisa Zaharias, includes Kayla at the end of the episode called “Abducted by a Parent.”

The Illinois state’s attorney’s office stated that Heather Unbehaun was released from custody on 16 May after posting a $250,000 bond.

According to the report, Heather declined to renounce extradition. Therefore, it is likely that Heather will be transferred to Illinois to face charges.

The 40-year-old mother is set to make her first court appearance in North Carolina’s Buncombe County Court on 11 July.
